ENTREVISTA A NECHOCHWEN (USA) por Metal Music Clan (Spanish version)

Hoy en Metal Music Clan tenemos el honor de presentar a una banda como Nechochwen, formación Neofolk/ Folk / Black Metal desde el este de Virginia (USA) basada en las tradiciones de los Nativos Americanos.

En Nechochwen, además de una música excelente (donde se añaden también instrumentos nativos), encontrás la esencia de los Rituales Tribales, la Naturaleza y la cultura Folclórica de los Montes Apalaches.

1.Metal Music Clan da la bienvenida a Nechochwen . ¿Podéis hablarnos un poco sobre la historia de la banda y por qué decidiste el nombre de Nechochwen? ¿Cuándo y dónde comienza Nechochwen?

Nechochwen es un nombre que he tenido durante 27 años, es un nombre Lenape (lengua nativa indígena americana) y su significado es 'caminar solo', un nombre apropiado cuando comencé a escribir música para el primer álbum, Algonkian Mythos, porque en 2005 yo escribí e interpreté toda la música, en el norte de Virginia Occidental. 

Había hecho algunas apariciones especiales en otros álbumes antes de esto, también  bajo el mismo nombre. 

Para 2009, más o menos, quise expandirme con algunos sonidos y atmósferas más pesadas en la música de Nechochwen. Pohonasin se convirtió en miembro de pleno derecho de Nechochwen después de diseñar el primer álbum. Hemos continuado de esta manera desde entonces como una banda de dos piezas.

2. ¿Cuál es la formación actual de la banda? ¿Podéis hacer una breve presentación de los miembros?

3. ¿Qué discos habéis lanzado hasta ahora ?, por favor, preséntadnos vuestros últimos trabajos, el recopilatorio del álbum "The Ancient Pulse" (2018) y Nechochwen / Bhleg Split (2019). ¿Qué podemos encontrar en estos álbumes?

Tenemos editados: Algonkian Mythos (2008), Azimuths to the Otherworld (2010), Oto (2013), Heart of Akamon (2015), The Ancient Pulse (2018), Nechochwen / Bhleg split 7 "(2019), Nechochwen / Panopticon split (2020) .

The Ancient Pulse es una retrospectiva de 10 años que contiene versiones reelaboradas y remasterizadas de pistas de álbumes, dos canciones que provienen de recopilatorios y dos temas de portada. 

El compartido con Bhleg es todo material nuevo de ambas bandas, una canción cada una. Tuve el honor de tocar la flauta nativa americana en la canción de Bhleg.

4.Nechochwen es una banda de Neofolk Folk / Black Metal basada en las Tradiciones de los Nativos Americanos, los Rituales Tribales, la Naturaleza, la historia y la cultura Folclórica de los Apalaches.

¿Cuáles son vuestras inspiraciones para escribir música y letras?

En general, he tenido este deseo u obligación de escribir riffs y canciones desde que tenía unos 11 años. Simplemente sucede al azar o cuando tengo algo de tiempo libre para tocar la guitarra por diversión. 

Esto sucede mucho más a menudo cuando me siento inspirado por algo en la naturaleza o al aprender sobre la historia local, estar en los viejos campamentos y sitios de aldeas de hace siglos, o leer un buen libro sobre estos temas. 

He pasado muchos años conectándome con otros y aprendiendo tradiciones oscuras. Si hay algún tema que pienso que puede crear una atmósfera a la que  conectarme o una experiencia que me da la sensación de que estoy saliendo del mundo moderno, por lo general, algunas palabras vendrán a mi mente y tendré riffs en mi cabeza por tales motivos.

5. ¿Qué tal los conciertos? ¿Contádnos un poco sobre vuestros conciertos y experiencias en vivo?

Probablemente tengo mucha menos experiencia que la mayoría de los músicos de mi edad cuando se trata de tocar. He dado cientos y cientos de conciertos de guitarra acústica, clásica y de jazz. 

Nechochwen ha tocado algunas actuaciones acústicas, pero aún no ha tocado nuestra música más pesada en vivo como una banda de metal completa. 

Tocar en bandas de metal en vivo realmente no ha sido lo mío, pero tal vez eso cambie en el futuro.

6. Por favor. ¿Podéis darnos una breve explicación sobre la próxima letra de Nechochwen "Ancient Pulse"?

-The Lodge (El albergue): Fueron varios proyectos musicales los que llevaron al desarrollo de Nechochwen como una entidad musical. La música acústica que Pohonasin y yo estábamos creando hace unos 16 años fue nueva y satisfactoria para nosotros, y también indicativa de lo que vendrá. 

En 2002, llamamos a nuestros experimentos en los géneros acústicos, folclóricos y clásicos "Forest of the Soul". The Lodge está inspirada en una casa de campo llena de sudor, situada en una antigua mina en el norte de Virginia Occidental, donde comenzamos a intercambiar estas ideas musicales. Pensamos en The Lodge como introducción a un proyecto que, en ese momento, aún no existía.

El tema, la letra y la música tienen más en común con Nechochwen que con Forest of the Soul, aunque precedió a Algonkian Mythos por varios años. La versión actualizada presentada aquí se basa en un marco de la percusión y la atmósfera del trabajo original del álbum homónimo de 2004 "Forest of the Soul", pero la guitarra y las partes vocales se han regrabado.

-Fallen Timbers (Maderas caídas): En 2005, comencé atribuyendo más significado temático y simbólico a mis piezas de guitarra acústica que antes. En lugar de escribir libros similares a las narrativas de la Historia de los Estados Unidos que me inspiraron (que era mi intención original), elegí escribir música que capturara el espíritu del este de Norteamérica del siglo XVIII.

 Algonkian Mythos fue lanzado en 2008 a través de Dark Horizon Records. Fallen Timbers, la primera canción escrita para el álbum, fue un intento de crear una atmósfera de reflexión sobre la triste batalla de Fallen Timbers y su efecto en las naciones involucradas. Las guitarras se han regrabado en esta nueva versión; Pohonasin ha agregado bajo y percusión, así como una nueva mezcla y remasterización.

-Nilu-famu: Nilu-famu, también de Algonkian Mythos, se dedica a la importancia espiritual del tabaco. Se refiere, en particular, a las semillas de tabaco lathiima. La canción tiene una estructura simple pero su melodía es una de nuestras favoritas. Para esta versión, las guitarras de melodía y armonía, así como la percusión se han regrabado, se han agregado bajos y voces, y la canción se ha remezclado y remasterizado.

-Winterstrife (Lucha de invierno): Esta versión de Winterstrife ha sido completamente remezclada y remasterizada de la original, que apareció en el recopilatorio de 2010 "Der Wanderer uber dem Nebelmeer", lanzado por Pest Productions y Midnight Records. El álbum se basó en las interpretaciones musicales de los artistas de la icónica pintura de 1818 de Caspar David Friedrich. Winterstrife fue la primera implementación de batería, bajo, guitarras distorsionadas, flauta nativa americana y canto melódico de Nechochwen.

De las notas del recopilatorio: "Cuando vi la pintura, no pensé en Europa sino en las estribaciones de los Apalaches donde vivo. Me recordó las luchas por las que ha pasado la gente en mi región. La canción trata sobre un hombre en la Gran Depresión que observa cómo la niebla se levanta del río Ohio desde su cabaña en la montaña. Se pregunta cómo va a alimentar a sus hijos este invierno. ¿Quizás su esposa murió en el parto? Los niños tienen hambre y él ha estado sin trabajo. El clima ha sido frío y es difícil mantener la cabaña caliente. Y esos niños siguen llorando. Está en su punto de ruptura, mirando hacia el mar de niebla. Esto era común en Virginia Occidental hace años, ya que la pobreza y el hambre siempre estaban a solo una colina de distancia ”.

-Allumhammochwen- La travesía: Con los cambios estilísticos que hicimos al escribir y grabar nuestro segundo álbum, "Azimuths to the Otherworld" en 2010, surgieron tanto la ansiedad como la sensación de libertad de poder explorar cualquier género que creíamos pudiese transmitir el significado más apropiado para nuestro material. En este momento, habíamos firmado con Bindrune Recordings y estábamos escribiendo canciones sobre la prehistoria de América del Norte e incorporando los elementos de la muerte y el Black Metal en los que habíamos crecido. Allumhammochwen - La travesía abrió el álbum con una alegoría sobre las migraciones en la antigüedad; La nueva versión presentada aquí ha sido remezclada y remasterizada.

-At Night May I Roam (En la noche puedo vagar): La letra de esta canción, la segunda canción de Azimuths to the Otherworld, proviene de un poema de Lakota traducido al inglés. Estamos muy contentos de que esta canción haya sido construida con un crescendo tan enérgico sin usar guitarras distorsionadas. Continúa el espíritu migratorio de The Crossing; El poema nos recuerda que día y noche, siempre estamos deambulando y explorando. Esta versión es remezclada y remasterizada.

-On the Wind (En el viento): Nuestro tercer lanzamiento, salió en 2013, solo en vinilo, Oto, fue escrito durante un tiempo turbulento y fue un álbum más introspectivo y filosófico. Estaba buscando muchas respuestas por mí mismo, y supongo que esta canción fue mi forma de recordarme que estar en la naturaleza es a menudo el mejor lugar para encontrar la dirección. Era importante incluir On the Wind en esta colección porque aborda la preservación de las lenguas y culturas indígenas, un tema que es muy importante para nosotros. Esta versión ha sido remezclada y remasterizada.

-Heya Hona: Es parte del lado B y mucho más pesado de Oto, Heya Hona es una canción escrita para honrar a Kokumthiina y para reflexionar sobre nuestras conexiones humanas con la naturaleza. Incluso en los tiempos modernos, podemos sentir el antiguo pulso del espíritu que se mueve a través de todas las cosas. Las guitarras rítmicas en esta versión han sido regrabadas y la canción ha sido remezclada y remasterizada.

-Song of the White-tailed Deer (Canción del ciervo de cola blanca): La mayoría de las pistas de guitarra y piano para esta canción se dejaron durante varios años como una idea incompleta que llamamos Nova hasta que recibimos una solicitud de Bindrune Recordings para una pista inédita consu sello discográfico en 2014, Untamed and Eternal. 

Después de varias interacciones extrañas con ciervos, sentí que era apropiado organizar estas partes en una canción y letra sobre los ciervos. Esta versión actualizada se remezcla y remasteriza desde el lanzamiento original, solo digital.

8. Por favor, dádnos una opinión sobre las siguientes palabras:

-Mitología: Es muy importante seguir enseñando esto a los niños. Hay cosas en ella que son cruciales para comprender nuestro mundo a un nivel más profundo que el que proporciona la tecnología moderna.

-Madre Tierra: Tan hermosa. Y ella te pateará el culo sin previo aviso. No la trates como basura, cuídala.

-Historia nativa americana: Ese es un tema realmente enorme. Es tan variado y cubre tanto tiempo y territorio que no sé por dónde empezar. Ha sido un gran interés para mí durante décadas y aprendo cosas nuevas al respecto todo el tiempo.

-Instrumentos de metal extremo con música Folk: A veces funciona de maravilla y a veces no, ¿verdad?

10. ¿Planes futuros para Nechochwen?

Bindrune Recordings lanzará un LP compartido con Nechochwen y Panopticon, y la fecha de lanzamiento programada será enero de 2020. Estamos casi a la mitad de la grabación de nuestro quinto álbum y planeamos terminarlo el próximo año. ¡También tenemos nuevos diseños de camisas y parches que se revelarán pronto!

INTERVIEW TO NECHOCHWEN (USA) by Metal Music Clan (English version)

Today at Metal Music Clan we have the honor of introducing a band like Nechochwen, a Neofolk / Folk / Black Metal formation from Eastern Virginia (USA) based on Native American traditions.
In Nechochwen, in addition to excellent music (where native instruments are also added), you will find the essence of Tribal Rituals, Nature and the Folklore culture of the Appalachian Mountains.

1.Welcome Nechochwen to Metal Music Clan. Could you tell us a bit about the history of the band and why did you decide the name Nechochwen? When and where start Nechochwen?
Nechochwen is a name I’ve had for 27 years now, it’s a Lenape name and since it means walks alone, it was a fitting name when I started writing music for the first album, Algonkian Mythos, because I was writing and performing all the music myself in 2005 in northern West Virginia. I had done some guest appearances on other albums before this under the same name. By 2009 or so I wanted to expand to some heavier sounds and atmospheres in Nechochwen’s music. Pohonasin became a full-member of Nechochwen after engineering the first album. We have continued this way ever since as a two-piece.

2.Which is the current line-up of the band? Could you do a brief presentation of the members?

Nechochwen – Guitars and vocals, some percussion

Pohonasin – Bass and drums, some vocals

3.Which records have your released until now?, please, present us your last works, the album compilation  "The Ancient Pulse" (2018) and Nechochwen / Bhleg Split (2019).What can we find in this álbums?

Algonkian Mythos (2008), Azimuths to the Otherworld (2010), Oto (2013), Heart of Akamon (2015), The Ancient Pulse (2018), Nechochwen/Bhleg split 7” (2019), Nechochwen/Panopticon split (2020). 


The Ancient Pulse is a 10-year retrospective containing reworked and remastered versions of album tracks, two songs that came from compilations, and two cover songs. The split with Bhleg is all new material from both bands, one song each. I had the honor of playing Native American flute on Bhleg’s track. 

4.Nechochwen it's a Folk/Black Metal, Neofolk band based on Native American Traditions, Tribal Rituals, Nature, history and Appalachian Folk culture.
What are your inspirations to write music and lyrics?


In general, I’ve had this desire or compulsion to write riffs and songs since I was about 11 years old. It just happens at random or when I have some free time to just play guitar for fun. This happens much more often when I am inspired by something in nature or in learning about local history, being in the old camps and village sites from centuries ago, or reading a good book about these subjects. I’ve spent many years connecting with others and learning obscure traditions. If there is some subject that I think creates an atmosphere that I need to connect to or an experience that gives me a feeling that I am stepping out of the modern world, usually some words about it will come to mind and I’ll have riffs in my head from it. 

5.How about your concerts? Talk to us a bit about your concerts and live experiences?


I probably have a lot less experience than most musicians my age when it comes to playing shows. I have played hundreds and hundreds of acoustic, classical, and jazz guitar gigs. Nechochwen has played a few acoustic performances but have yet to play our heavier music live as a full metal band. Playing in live metal bands really hasn’t been my thing, but maybe that will change in the future. 

6.Please.Could you give us a brief explanation about the next lyrics of Nechochwen "Ancient Pulse" ?:

-The Lodge: Several musical projects led to the development of Nechochwen as a musical entity. The acoustic music that Pohonasin and I were creating about 16 years ago was new and fulfilling to us, and also indicative of things to come. We called our experiments in acoustic, folk, and classical genres Forest of the Soul in 2002. The Lodge was inspired by a sweat lodge at an old strip mine site in northern West Virginia where we began to exchange these musical ideas. We think of The Lodge as an introduction to a project that, at that time, did not yet exist. 
The theme, lyrics, and music have more in common with Nechochwen than with Forest of the Soul, though it preceded Algonkian Mythos by several years. The updated version presented here is built upon a framework of the percussion and atmosphere of the original work from the self-titled 2004 album Forest of the Soul but the guitar and vocal parts have been re-recorded.  

-Fallen Timbers: In 2005, I began to attach more thematic and symbolic meaning to my acoustic guitar pieces than before. Rather than write books similar to the American History narratives that have inspired me (which was my original intent), I chose to write music that I hoped would capture the spirit of 18th Century eastern North America. Algonkian Mythos was released in 2008 through Dark Horizon Records. Fallen Timbers, the first song written for the album, was an attempt to create an atmosphere of reflection on the sorrowful Battle of Fallen Timbers and its effect on the Nations involved. The slide guitars have been re-recorded on this new version; Pohonasin has added bass and percussion as well as an all new mix and remaster. 

-Nilu-famu: Nilu-famu, also from Algonkian Mythos, is dedicated to the spiritual importance of tobacco. It refers, in particular, to the seeds of lathiima tobacco. The song has a simple structure but its melody is one of our favorites. For this version, the melody and harmony guitars as well as percussion have been re-recorded, bass and vocals were added, and the song has been remixed and remastered.

-Winterstrife: This version of Winterstrife has been completely remixed and remastered from the original, which appeared on the 2010 compilation, Der Wanderer uber dem Nebelmeer, released by Pest Productions and Midnight Records. The album was based on the artists’ musical interpretations of Caspar David Friedrich’s iconic 1818 painting. Winterstrife was Nechochwen’s first implementation of drums, bass, distorted guitars, Native American flute, and melodic singing. 

From the compilation’s liner notes: “When I saw the painting, I thought not of Europe but the foothills of Appalachia where I live. It reminded me of the struggles people have gone through in my region. The song is about a man in the Great Depression watching the fog lift off of the Ohio River from his shack on a mountain. He is wondering how he is going to feed his children this winter. Perhaps his wife died in childbirth? The kids are hungry and he has been out of work. The weather has been cold and it’s hard to keep the cabin warm. And those kids keep crying. He is at his breaking point, gazing out into the sea of fog. This was common in West Virginia years ago, as poverty and hunger was always just a hilltop away.” 

-Allumhammochwen- The Crossing: With the stylistic shifts we made when writing and recording our second album, 2010’s Azimuths to the Otherworld, came both anxiety and a sense of freedom that we could explore any genre that we felt would most appropriately convey meaning in our material. By this time, we had signed with Bindrune Recordings and we were writing songs about the prehistory of North America and incorporating the death and black metal elements that we had grown up on. Allumhammochwen – The Crossing opened the album with an allegory about migration in ancient times; the new version presented here has been remixed and remastered. 

-At Night May I Roam: The lyrics for this song, the second track from Azimuths to the Otherworld, came from a Lakota poem translated into English. We were very pleased that this song built to such an energetic crescendo without the use of any distorted guitars. It continues the migratory spirit of The Crossing; the poem reminds us that day and night, we are always roaming and exploring. This version is remixed and remastered.

-On the Wind: Our third release, the 2013, vinyl-only Oto, was written during a turbulent time and was a more introspective, philosophical album. I was searching for a lot of answers myself, and I suppose this song was my way of reminding myself that being in nature is often the best place to find direction. We feel that it was important to include On the Wind in this collection because it addresses the preservation of indigenous languages and cultures, a subject that is very important to us. This version has been remixed and remastered.
 
-Heya Hona: Taken from the much heavier Side B of Oto, Heya Hona is a song written to honor Kokumthiina and to ponder our human connections to nature. Even in modern times, we can feel the ancient pulse of the spirit that moves through all things. The rhythm guitars in this version have been re-recorded and the song has been remixed and remastered. 

-Song of the White-tailed Deer: Most of the guitar and piano tracks for this song sat for several years as an incomplete idea we called Nova until we got a request from Bindrune Recordings for an unreleased track for their 2014 label comp, Untamed and Eternal. After several strange interactions with deer, I felt it was proper to organize these parts into a song and lyrics about deer. This updated version is remixed and remastered from the original, digital-only release.

8.Please, give us a opinnion about the next Words:

-Mitology: It’s very important to keep teaching this to kids. There are things in it that are crucial to understanding our world on a deeper level than what modern technology provides.

-Mother Earth: So beautiful. And she will kick your ass without warning. Don’t treat her like garbage, take care of her.

-American Indian history:That’s a really huge subject. It’s so varied and covers so much time and territory that I don’t know where to begin. It has been a big interest of mine for decades and I learn new things about it all the time. 

-Extreme Metal and Folk instruments: Sometimes it works beautifully and sometimes it doesn’t, right?

10.Future plans for Nechochwen?

Bindrune Recordings will release a split LP with Nechochwen and Panopticon, slated for a January 2020 release date. We are nearly halfway through the recording of our fifth album and we plan to finish it in the coming year. We also have new shirt and patch designs that will be revealed soon!
