INTERVIEW TO ANCIENT RITES (Belgium) by Metal Music Clan

Today at Metal Music Clan we have the honor of interviewing a cult Black Metal band that needs no introduction. Belgium, late 80s, ANCIENT RITES was born there. In this interview answered by Erik and Gunther you will find a good review of the trajectory of Ancient Rites as well as other aspects and very interesting details.We leave you with the words of this brutal band born to unearth ancestral swords and awaken the spirits of the ancient world and the medieval era.

1.ANCIENT RITES sees the light in 1988 in Belgium. Can you tell us a little about the history of the band since its inception?

Gunther: ANCIENT RITES was created at the end of the 80’s. All members used to play in other bands before, rooted in early 80’s Heavy Metal but also pioneering in the first wave of Black and other extreme Metal genres. When the band was formed their music style and the entire concept of occult and historically inspired lyrics was far from being popular. It was an era when Glam and Alternative styles dominated the scene. Still, a local following was built up who called themselves the Ancient Rites Death Militia. The line-up consisted of JOHAN and PHILIP (guitars), STEFAN (drums) and GUNTHER (bass/vocals). One year later the "DARK RITUAL" demo was released and spread throughout the entire underground worldwide, still by old fashioned regular mail as it was the pre-internet age. Soon after the recordings PHILIP died in a car accident, problems forced the band to replace STEFAN by drum roadie WALTER (STEFAN took his own life) and JOHAN decided to leave the Metal scene. PASCAL and BART (guitars) joined and the "EVIL PREVAILS" ep ('92) was recorded and released through their own label FALLEN ANGEL RECORDS as initially no one was interested in signing a band in their style. The D.I.Y. attitude by releasing their own material and international underground contacts through tape trading spread the band name. The “Evil Prevails” sessions were released through several other record companies such as WILD RAGS (USA) and Colombian WARMASTER. PASCAL left the band when joining the Navy. As a three piece ANCIENT RITES released several split ep's (Belgian AFTER DARK RECORDS and Greek MOLON LAVE RECORDS), a split lp and appeared on several compilation albums. 1994 The debut full length album "THE DIABOLIC SERENADES" was released through AFTER DARK (CD version) and MIDIAN CREATIONS (LP format). Licensing deals were signed to guarantee a worldwide distribution (OSMOSE, MORBID NOIZZ). AFTER DARK turned out to be a total rip off and eventually ceased to exist leaving no penny for the band that had invested its own money in the recordings, artwork and photo sessions. In 1995 a deal was signed with Dutch MASCOT RECORDS and "BLASFEMIA ETERNAL" was released January '96. Throughout the years of A.R.'s existence the band had to deal with a lot of misfortune (boycotts, bomb threats, hostile anti-B.M. audiences in an age when none of the few existing  B.M. bands were touring, ripped off for large amounts of money by labels and promoters, members ending up in hospital or dying). However hardship can be turned into motivation. May '96 BART left the band which made A.R. a duo (WALTER & GUNTHER) working with session musicians. Guitarists of bands like PENTACLE, ABSU, KATATONIA, SWORDMASTER, LUCIFERIAN volunteered to give A.R. a helping hand. Although rooted in Flanders (Belgium) ANCIENT RITES slowly turned into an international act. On the third album entitled "FATHERLAND" (recorded February/March '98) musicians from Holland, Suomi-Finland, Germany and Belgium made their contribution consisting of ERIK (ex-INQUISITOR, guitars), JAN "ÖRKKI" (ex-PRESTIGE/TWO WITCHES/LACRIMOSA, guitars), WALTER (drums) and GUNTHER (bass/vocals). A compilation album entitled “THE FIRST DECADE 1989-1999” was released to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the band. After a negotiation and business transaction between the labels ANCIENT RITES moved from MASCOT RECORDS to HAMMERHEART RECORDS for which a fourth full length entitled “DIM CARCOSA” was recorded in winter 2000/2001. The album entered the independent Dutch charts on the 9th position. A Line-up change took place when DOMINGO SMETS (ex-RENAISSANCE/AGATHOCLES, keyboards) was replaced by DAVY WOUTERS (ex-OBLIVION). The Live CD/DVD “AND THE HORDES STOOD AS ONE” saw the light of day in 2003. Guitarist BART VANDEREYCKEN made his unexpected return to replace JAN YRLUND. The “RUBICON” album also marked the return of two other former band members: guitarist RAF JANSEN (who played with ANCIENT RITES during the BLASFEMIA ETERNAL tour) and DOMINGO SMETS on bass guitar. GUNTHER decided to concentrate on vocal duties in ANCIENT RITES. With this old/new line up combination the band released an album entitled “Rubicon” through Season of Mist. After a line up change, the band consisted of WALTER VAN CORTENBERG (drums), ERIK SPROOTEN (guitars), DOMINGO SMETS (guitars) and GUNTHER THEYS (vocals) and a new album for MASSACRE RECORDS entitled “LAGUZ” was recorded. The journey of ANCIENT RITES is a long one, always distanced from popular trends and often against all odds. For years A.R. fans often refer to themselves as “Ancient Hordes” in the atmosphere of the ancient historical concept, which is typical for the band. There always has been a strong and spontaneous bond between the band and their public, untouched by commercialism or latest fashions in the scene, away from rock star attitudes. This was celebrated on the live cd/dvd “AND THE HORDES STOOD AS ONE”. Through “LAGUZ” ANCIENT RITES mark a new chapter in the band’s history. As always, each album sounds different from the other, yet all works are recognisably ANCIENT RITES, displaying an own style and authenticity. “LAGUZ” is an invitation to enter long forgotten worlds through the dark/historical lyrics and the music, which combines fierce Metal with classical orchestrations in order to evoke era’s buried by time and dust. Testimonies of the rise and downfall of civilisations and individuals who come to life again when the heart and mind open to echoes from the past. Also philosophy is touched upon through a message of cultivating a positive inner strength while facing the storms in life. “Laguz” in A.R. tradition avoids lyrical and musical clichés which sometimes makes it a bit difficult to place the band for those who like to use typical terms to describe the universe of ANCIENT RITES.

2.What is the current formation of ANCIENT RITES?  Were there many changes in the line-up from the beginning until now?

Erik: The current line-up is:

Ancient Rites has seen many changes in the line-up but they are inevitable and happen for a reason. Each ex-member has contributed to Ancient Rites in his own way.  And despite all these line-up changes, Ancient Rites still sounds like Ancient Rites.

4.Tell us a little about your shows and live history. Any good, bad or funny remember from any of your gigs to share with us?

Gunther: A.R. toured Europe and the U.K. several times and performed with acts such as DEICIDE, MOTÖRHEAD, JUDAS PRIEST, CRADLE OF FILTH, METALLICA, DISSECTION, MORBID ANGEL, S.O.D., MERCYFUL FATE, MARDUK, IMPALED NAZARENE, MANOWAR, SEPULTURA, VENOM, ROTTING CHRIST, GUNS ’N ROSES, BEHEMOTH, SAXON to mention a few. We also played the United States and Asia. Highlights in our career were playing the legendary Marquee in London, the famous Thorns club at Athens, the very first big extreme Metal fest in Lisbon (sponsored by Coca Cola and the mayor!) and appearing on mega Metal festivals such as DYNAMO OPEN AIR or GRASPOP to mention a few. It is fascinating to see how crowds differ from country to country, city to city even. Whenever there is some free time available (after the sound check for instance) I leave the venue to taste a bit of the local culture. I’m thrilled when I have the chance to visit museums, monuments or ancient/medieval remains. All this keeps touring interesting. It often is hard and stressful but there’s a certain charm involved too. Intensity, positive or negative, is what we seek. In the old days we touring was like a party every day and we didn’t bother about rest or sleep at all. Sure, we always wanted to deliver a tight show but nowadays, our music became more complex plus there are higher expectations from both press and public, as we often are in a headliner position. Therefore it is important to keep a clear head. None of the A.R.. members are into drugs and alcohol abuse before a gig is not received positively. Each member has to keep control and a task to fulfill. We are quite disciplined, I know that doesn’t sound very Rock’n Roll but people pay to see a decent show and that is what matters most to us. Funny and strange stories there are plenty. I remember one show we had to play in Austria in a remote place in the mountains. The club owners who had booked the show had no idea about Metal. I talked to the lady of the venue and she said that she heard about underground and that it means those musicians live “under the ground”. And they all shake their heads. That evening many people came to the club but no one liked us. They all turned their backs. As a joke we played a popular riff of a rock hit and suddenly they all started cheering. But when we continued with our own stuff they turned their backs on us again. At one point I heard a voice coming from the front of the stage: it was my father who was with us on the road as a part of the roadcrew. “You might as well stop playing guys, no one’s watching!” he said. I tried to look into the dark and indeed the entire crowd was at the bar with their backs on us. Not one person was into our style of music. The Lady of the club had been correct, they had provided us a good meal and paid the tour promoter but she gave us an unfriendly look after the show. When we left no one spoke to us, not even a goodbye. I had to laugh about the absurd situation, the others didn’t know what to think and felt uncomfortable. The more uncomfortable they looked, the more funny I thought it all was. I thought it was hilarious, like a bad comedy. I think that night in Austria was our most unsuccessful show ever, but the funniest, I’ll never forget. I suspect the tour promoters hadn’t really told the club owners what type of music we were playing, or they didn’t understand. Nor did the audience .     

5.What were the inspirations for the creation of the band and the ideas to express with your music and lyrics?

Gunther: Obviously there is a connection between our band's name and lyrical approach. The ANCIENT part is referring to our fascination towards Ancient/Medieval civilizations and empires which are forever buried by time and dust while the RITES stand for our connection with the Dark side. Ever since my childhood I'm consumed by these topics and obviously this fascination has a big impact on our work. My life has been a constant quest for historical knowledge. Therefore I consider myself lucky being able to travel a lot to experience and witness with my own eyes everything I learned about as a child through history books and literature. I have travelled through the Sahara desert by camels and visited remains of ancient civilizations in desolate places, I have entered the temple of Baalberith where thousands of years ago human (infant) sacrifices took place, descended down Portuguese crypts, visited ancient Greek temples, wandered through the remains of the streets of ancient Rome, travelled through Spanish mountains by horse, walked through medieval cities all over the East and West of Europe, saw where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake, followed rivers surrounded by castles that are silent witnesses of the splendour of the middle ages, was in the centre of Mycenean, Phoenician and Carthaginian War civilizations whose walls and streets much to my surprise still were quite intact, was surprised by the artistic aspects of the ancient Minoan Empire and was overwhelmed by the splendour of Asia Minor etc. The most spiritual and timeless moments I experienced when being on ancient/medieval locations. I consider it an advantage I live in a small medieval city in a house which is a protected monument because it is a part of a medieval abbey. When I look outside my bedroom window I witness the middle ages, a few houses next to ours there is some kind of a bridge where bats live, all very picturesque. Concerning the Dark side I relate to certain philosophies of Satanism but in a symbolic (non religious/non dogmatic) way. A code based on knowledge, wisdom, strength and self respect. A down to earth, realistic approach guided by own instincts and principles. However, I find it important to avoid the same traps one can find in other religions. I do not believe in any higher (or lower for that matter) entities. Personally I relate to ancient traditions, therefore also Heathen Ancestral religion catches my interest/sympathy. All this (and more) is reflecting on the lyrics I write and our work in general. Musically it always was important for ANCIENT RITES to aim for an own identity, I don’t think we ever sounded like any other band, not even the bands we liked. There’s no need for copy cats, far too many around already. I think we sound different on each release, yet the sound is unmistakably ANCIENT RITES, so is the concept. I think different forms of Metal can be detected in our music because we have such a long history (decades) of appreciating the genre in its variable forms. I think we create our own type of Metal which can be labeled as Black Metal, but in our own original way. From day one we always aimed for an authentic approach.   

6.Which musical bands has been an influence for you?

Gunther: I think no band directly influenced our sound. As an example, I will explain my personal journey, as a musician. I became an active “musician” in the 70’s, as a young kid. I was listening Hardrock but it was the ’77 Punkrock explosion that inspired me to grab an instrument, bands like Sex Pistols, Ramones, The Damned etc The “no nonsense”, energetic and aggressive sound appealed to me. I formed several bands in the genre, back in the late 70’s/early 80’s. Motörhead inspired me to start playing Metal in the early 80’s and Venom opened the way for Black Metal, yet I don’t think we sound like any of the bands that inspired me to start playing music. Even in my young years, with my Punkrock bands, we did not sound like any of the bands I liked. I always felt it was important to create something of your own, to express oneself in an original way. Taking inspiration from the elements of the music one likes, without imitating bands. Everyone in AR has his own personal favorite bands but our tastes often differ. Actually that’s not a negative thing because that is an extra way to avoid subconsciously being influenced by a certain band. 

Erik: I agree with Gunther, but my influences are a bit different compared to Gunther's. My musical journey started when I was exposed to KISS in 1979. It was the guitarplaying of Ace Frehley that made me want to play guitar in the first place, but I actually started playing guitar quite a few years later, but he is definetely an influence on me and he still is. I probably started playing guitar in 1988 and my first band experience was in 1989 but that didn't last very long. In 1992 things got more serious when extreme thrash metal band Inquisitor was founded. In 1996 I was session-guitarist on tour for Ancient Rites while I wasv still in Inquisitor, and I officially joined Ancient Rites in 1997. My influences are mostly Thrash, Death and Black metal but I was still, and still am, influenced by Hardrock and Heavy Metal too. If I have to name a few bands who influenced me, I would name Slayer, Dark Angel, Judas Priest, Sadus, Black Sabbath & Vader. Guitarists who I admire and have influenced me are: Michael Schenker (UFO/MSG), Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple/Rainbow), KK Downing & Glenn Tipton (Judas Priest), Uli Jon Roth (Scorpions), Toni Iommi (Black Sabbath).
Despite all these influences I've always tried to create my own way of playing and creating music regardless of any trends. My main focus musically is metal of course but I sometimes study guitarplaying of non-metal music. I'm still trying to improve and become more versatile and practising new techniques like for instance hybrid picking.

7.Could you give us a brief introduction to the lyrics of the following songs from ANCIENT RITES album "Laguz" (2015)?

Gunther:
01 - Golden Path to Samarkand: A musical journey, travelling the legendary ancient silk road, through dangerous, mysterious and exotic lands.

02 - Carthago Delenda Est: A focus on the Ancient Phoenician civilization and its ultimate downfall at the end the Punic Wars with Rome.

03 - Under the Sign of Laguz: The ancient Laguz rune stands for physical and spiritual “travel” and growth. From a philosophical point of view a symbol of conquering obstacles.

04 - Von Gott Entfernt: Based on the 18th century Bokkenrijders (Goat Riders) phenomenon, an occult Horde that operated in our Lowlands causing fear fort hey robbed churches and wealthy citizens, member swore an oath to the Devil. The historical facts turned into Folklore and myths during the trials, which lead to mass prosecutions, torture  and executions. One of my personal ancestors belonged to one of the Hordes, as old documents testify and was considered Captain of his Group. They worked with military ranks. He escaped from prison before his execution and founded a Bokkenrijders group elsewhere, according to the diary of a local priest of that time.

05 - Apostata: A tribute to the last Heathen Roman Emperor Julianus, who tried to turn the tide when the Roman Empire had been Christianised. His reign was short and tragic. Rumours state he was murdered on the battlefield, by his own body guard, who had been bribed by the Roman clergy, because his policy was to restore ancient heathendom.

06 - Legio V Alaudae: A focus on the only official Roman Legion that did not consist of Romans but by Gauls. Usually, foreign non Roman soldiers were enlisted in Auxiliary units/troops but Leg V was founded by Caesar during his campaigns in Gaul with allied Gauls, much against the will of the Roman Senate. The legion became legendary but met its doom during a campaign in Dacia, overpowered by high numbers and were completely wiped out.  Their history was an intense, complex and tragic one.

07 - Mind Unconquered: Praising the strength of the Mind and Will. An attitude which always helped me facing obstacles in life, spiritually and physically.

08 - Umbra Sumus: A song reflecting on mortality, how we all become “shadows” eventually.

09 - Frankenland: A historical tribute to the ancient Frankish civilization.

10 - Fatum: About ill fate one can’t escape from when one’s days are numbered.

8.ANCIENT RITES is a band inspired by history, paganism and the ancient world. Can you give us a personal opinion about the following?

Gunther:

-Nature: I travelled several continents and can appreciate nature and the very different type of  landscapes in their wide and timeless variety. People usually prefer a certain type of landscape but I can’t chose because every place has its own, typical vibe and charm triggering my inspiration.

-Dark Medieval literature: Fascinating. Naturally I love exploring the darker type of literature. I have a large library containing ancient and medieval works, some even original manuscripts. My interest goes out to many types of ancient/medieval writings to be honest, not only the Occult but also works on philosophy, art, architecture, military history, politics, every day life, culture in general…

-Black Metal music: A musical field I loved to work on the moment the genre was created. This came natural because of my lifelong personal interests. It is the  musical expression of atmospheres and topics I always explored in literature and art in general. Being into Metal it was a logical step to create a darker type.

- Ancient Greek and Roman Mythology: Very rich and inspiring. Ever since my childhood, I have been very much interested in the “earthly” history of both civilizations and naturally their mythology is a part of that ancient world and culture. 

9 Tell us:


-A historical place of your country to visit:

Gunther:
For tourists with a limited time of time, who like an historical vibe and medieval architecture, I think the cities of Bruges (Brugge) and Ghent (Gent) are recommendable because the many historical buildings and museums are concentrated in the city centres within walking distance. Also Malines (Mechelen), Tournai (Doornik), Antwerp (Antwerpen) and Brussels are rich in history. Tongeren is the oldest city dating back to Roman times and worth a visit. Even my own smaller city Diest has a lot of historical sites and has seen many battles throughout European history because of its central location between provinces. 

-A traditional drink and food in your area: This country has a very rich beer tradition and every city, even many villages, have their own typical regional beers which vary in taste. A great beer of my city Diest, is Guild Beer. A beer that was especially brewed for the local Guild Fraternities, since the middle ages. I am a member of two of those medieval Fraternities: a Chamber of Rhetorica named The Lily, in which during medieval times people of the arts, literature and theatre were gathered. I also am a member of the Royal St George Guild, they were the city militia in the middle ages, responsible for the defense of the city. They also participated in military campaigns elsewhere. We still practice crossbow shooting, which is our traditional weapon. Recently, I have been elected Captain of that Guild, which is an honor; one literally steps into an old tradition as the Guild of St George officially exists over 800 years and survived to this day. Traditional food: there is a special pancake in my hometown called Kruidkoek, which is made with a typical herb of our valley.   

-A book to recommend: I love the local writer Ernest Claes (1885-1968). As no other, he could write about the people and old traditions of te region of the late 19th and early 20th century. With both drama and humour. I don’t think many of his books are translated abroad. His book “De Witte” (“Whitey”) was a big success in Germany though. It describes life in our region at the beginning of the 20th century, including many picturesque characters and is seen through the eyes of a kid who liked to play tricks on everyone. It is semi-autobiographical. The street I used to live in during my childhood, played a part in the book and films/series. Right opposite our door was a blacksmith. The location was one of the settings in the book, films and series. I feel nostalgia when I read the book or see the films/series, as my old street still exists but all houses are broken down and replaced by modern apartments.

11.Future plans and projects:

Gunther:
Several concerts are planned. We’ll play in Germany on the “Under the Black Sun” fest. And two dates in Poland are confirmed. Recently we announced an old school set consisting of material of our demo, ep’s and first two albums. A tribute to our early years and scene. Within a few hours the show sold out and a second show was added, in the same venue, the day before, which also sold out. The atmosphere and response was brilliant. It was a nice surprise to see how much interest there still was for our early work, which sold out many years ago.

Hoy en Metal Music Clan tenemos el honor de entrevistar a una banda Black Metal de culto que no necesita presentación.Bélgica, finales de los 80, allí nacía ANCIENT RITES. En esta entrevista que nos responden Erik y Gunther encontrarás un buen repaso a la trayectoria de Ancient Rites además de otros aspectos y detalles muy interesantes. Os dejamos con las palabras de esta brutal banda nacida para desenterrar  espadas ancestrales y despertar a los espíritus del mundo antiguo y la era medieval.

1. ANCIENT RITES ve la luz en 1988 en Bélgica. ¿Podéis contarnos un poco la historia de la banda desde su creación hasta hoy?

Gunther:

ANCIENT RITES nació a finales de los años 80. Todos los miembros solían tocar antes en otras bandas, arraigados en el Heavy Metal de principios de los 80, pero también fueron pioneros en la primera ola de los géneros Black y otros géneros extremos.

Cuando se formó la banda, el estilo musical y todo el concepto de letras con inspiración ocultista e histórica estaban lejos de ser populares.

Era una época en que los estilos Glam y Alternativo dominaban la escena. Aún así, se formó un grupo de seguidores locales que se autodenominaron la "ANCIENT RITES Death Militia".

La formación consistió en JOHAN y PHILIP (guitarras), STEFAN (batería) y GUNTHER (bajo / voz). Un año más tarde, la demo "DARK RITUAL" se lanzó y se extendió por todo el mundo underground, aún por correo tradicional, ya que era la era anterior a Internet.

Poco después de las grabaciones PHILIP murió en un accidente automovilístico y los problemas obligaron a la banda a reemplazar a STEFAN por WALTER en la batería (STEFAN se quitó la vida).
JOHAN decidió abandonar la escena del Metal.

PASCAL y BART (guitarras) se unieron y el Ep "EVIL PREVAILS" ep ('92) fue grabado y lanzado a través de su propio sello FALLEN ANGEL RECORDS, ya que inicialmente nadie estaba interesado en firmar para una banda del estilo.

El D.I.Y., la actitud de lanzar material propio, los contactos clandestinos internacionales a través de la venta de cintas difundieron el nombre de la banda.
Las sesiones de "Evil Prevails" fueron lanzadas a través de varias compañías discográficas como WILD RAGS (EE. UU.)  y WARMASTER de Colombia. PASCAL dejó la banda cuando se unió a la Marina.
Como ANCIENT RITES con tres componentes lanzamos varios Ep´s por partes (Con  AFTER DARK RECORDS de Bélgica y MOLON LAVE RECORDS de Grecia), un Lp compartido y apareciones en varios álbumes recopilatorios.

1994, El álbum debut "THE DIABOLIC SERENADES" se lanzó a través de AFTER DARK (versión en CD) y MIDIAN CREATIONS (formato LP). Se firmaron contratos de licencia para garantizar una distribución mundial (OSMOSE, MORBID NOIZZ).

AFTER DARK resultó ser una estafa total y finalmente dejó de existir, sin dejar ni un centavo para la banda que había invertido su propio dinero en las grabaciones, trabajos artísticos y sesiones de fotos.

En 1995 se firmó un acuerdo con el sello holandés MASCOT RECORDS y se lanzó "BLASFEMIA ETERNAL", fue en enero de 1996.
A lo largo de los años de existencia de AR, la banda tuvo que lidiar con muchas desgracias (boicots, amenazas de bomba, audiencias hostiles anti-BM en una época en que ninguna de las pocas bandas de BM existentes estaban de gira, estafados por grandes cantidades de dinero por sellos y promotores, miembros que terminan en el hospital o muriendo).

Sin embargo, las dificultades pueden convertirse en motivación.
Mayo del '96, BART dejó la banda quedando A.R.como un dúo (WALTER & GUNTHER) trabajando con músicos por sesiones. Guitarristas de bandas como PENTACLE, ABSU, KATATONIA, SWORDMASTER, LUCIFERIAN, ofrecieron a A.R. una mano amiga.

Aunque arraigados en Flandes (Bélgica), ANCIENT RITES se convirtió lentamente en algo internacional.

En el tercer álbum titulado "FATHERLAND" (grabado en febrero / marzo de 1998), músicos de Holanda, Suomi-Finlandia, Alemania y Bélgica hicieron su contribución con ERIK (ex INQUISITOR, a las guitarras), JAN "ÖRKKI" (ex PRESTIGE / DOS BRUJAS / LACRIMOSA, guitarras), WALTER (batería) y GUNTHER (bajo / voz).

Un álbum recopilatorio titulado "THE FIRST DECADE 1989-1999" fue lanzado para celebrar el décimo aniversario de la banda.
Tras una negociación y una transacción comercial entre sellos, ANCIENT RITES se trasladó de MASCOT RECORDS a HAMMERHEART RECORDS para el que se grabó una cuarto álbum completo, titulado "DIM CARCOSA", esto fue en el invierno 2000/2001.

El álbum entró en las listas holandesas independientes en la novena posición. Se produjo un cambio de alineación cuando DOMINGO SMETS (ex-RENACIMIENTO / AGATHOCLES, teclados) fue reemplazado por DAVY WOUTERS (ex-OBLIVION).

El CD / DVD en directo ““AND THE HORDES STOOD AS ONE” vió la luz del día en 2003. El guitarrista BART VANDEREYCKEN hizo su inesperado regreso para reemplazar a JAN YRLUND.
El álbum "RUBICON" también marcó el regreso de otros dos ex miembros de la banda: el guitarrista RAF JANSEN (que tocó con ANCIENT RITES durante la gira BLASFEMIA ETERNAL) y DOMINGO SMETS en el bajo.

GUNTHER decidió concentrarse en las tareas vocales de ANCIENT RITES. Con esta combinación de alineación antigua / nueva, la banda lanzó un álbum titulado "Rubicon" a través de Season of Mist.
Después de este cambio de formación, la banda estaba compuesta por WALTER VAN CORTENBERG (batería), ERIK SPROOTEN (guitarras), DOMINGO SMETS (guitarras) y GUNTHER THEYS (voz) y se grabó un nuevo álbum para MASSACRE RECORDS titulado "LAGUZ" .

El trayecto de ANCIENT RITES es largo, siempre alejado de las tendencias populares y, a menudo, contra viento y marea.
Por años los fans de A.R.se refieren a sí mismos como "Hordas Antiguas", dentro de la atmósfera y concepto histórico antiguo, que es típico de la banda.

Siempre ha existido un vínculo fuerte y espontáneo entre la banda y su público, sin tocar el comercialismo o las últimas modas de la escena, lejos de las actitudes de las estrellas de Rock. Esto se conmemoró con el cd / dvd en directo “AND THE HORDES STOOD AS ONE”.

A través de "LAGUZ", ANCIENT RITES marcan un nuevo capítulo en la historia de la banda. Como siempre, cada álbum suena diferente del otro, pero todas las obras son reconociblemente  ANCIENT RITES , mostrando un estilo y autenticidad propios.
 "LAGUZ" es una invitación a entrar en mundos olvidados a través de música y letras oscuras / históricas, combinando el  Metal más feroz con las orquestaciones clásicas, para evocar una Era enterrada por el tiempo y el polvo. Testimonios del surgimiento y la caída de civilizaciones e individuos que cobran vida nuevamente cuando el corazón y la mente se abren a los ecos del pasado.

También se toca la filosofía mediante un mensaje de cultivar una fuerza interior positiva mientras se afrontan los tormentos de la vida.
A través de "Laguz" en A.R. la tradición evita los clichés líricos y musicales, lo que a veces dificulta un poco catalogar la banda para aquellos a quienes les gusta usar términos típicos para describir el universo de ANCIENT RITES.

2. ¿Cuál es la formación actual de ANCIENT RITES? ¿Muchos cambios en la alineación desde principios hasta ahora?

4. Habladnos un poco de vuestros conciertos y directos. ¿Algún recuerdo bueno, malo o divertido de algun concierto para compartir con nosotros?

Gunther:

 A.R. realizó varias giras por Europa y el Reino Unido y actuó con bandas como DEICIDE, MOTÖRHEAD, JUDAS PRIEST, CRADLE OF FILTH, METALLICA, DISSECTION, MORBID ANGEL, SOD, MERCYFUL FATE, MARDUK, IMPALED NAZARENE, MANOWAR, SEPULTURA, VENOM, ROTTING CHRIST GUNS 'N ROSES, BEHEMOTH, SAXON por mencionar algunos.

También tocamos en los Estados Unidos y Asia.
Lo más destacado en nuestra carrera fue tocar en el legendario "Marquee" en Londres, el famoso club Thorns en Atenas, el primer gran festival de Metal extremo en Lisboa (patrocinado por Coca Cola y por el alcalde) y aparecer en mega festivales de Metal como DYNAMO OPEN AIR o GRASPOP, por mencionar algunos.

Es fascinante ver cómo las multitudes difieren de un país a otro, incluso de una ciudad a otra.
Siempre que hay algo de tiempo libre disponible (después de la prueba de sonido, por ejemplo), salgo del lugar para saborear un poco de la cultura local. Me emociona cuando tengo la oportunidad de visitar museos, monumentos o restos antiguos / medievales. Todo esto sigue haciendo interesantes las giras. A menudo es difícil y estresante, pero también está envuelto de un cierto encanto.

Intensidad, positiva o negativa, es lo que buscamos. En los viejos tiempos, las giras eran como una fiesta todos los días y no nos preocupamos por descansar o dormir en absoluto.
Cierto, siempre quisimos ofrecer un espectáculo cercano, pero hoy en día, nuestra música se ha vuelto más compleja y hay expectativas más altas tanto de la prensa como del público, ya que a menudo estamos en una posición de cabeza de cartel. Por lo tanto, es importante mantener la cabeza despejada.

Ninguno de los miembros de A.R está involucrado en el abuso de drogas y alcohol antes de que un concierto no sea recibido positivamente. Cada miembro tiene que mantener el control y una tarea que cumplir. Somos bastante disciplinados, sé que no suena muy Rock'n Roll, pero la gente paga para ver un espectáculo decente y eso es lo que más nos importa.

Historias divertidas y extrañas hay muchas. Recuerdo un directo que tuvimos que tocar en Austria, en un lugar remoto en las montañas. Los propietarios del club reservado para el espectáculo no tenían idea sobre Metal.
Hablé con la señora del lugar y me dijo que había oído hablar del underground y que eso significa que esos músicos viven "bajo tierra" y todos sacuden la cabeza.

Esa noche mucha gente vino al club pero a nadie caímos bien. Todos nos dieron la espalda. Como broma, tocamos un riff popular de un éxito del Rock y de repente todos comenzaron a animar.
Pero cuando continuamos con nuestras propias cosas, nos volvieron la espalda.

En otra ocasión escuché una voz que venía desde el frente del escenario: era mi padre quien estaba con nosotros en la carretera como parte de la tripulación. "¡Podríais dejar de tocar chicos, nadie está mirando!", Dijo.
Traté de mirar hacia la oscuridad y de hecho toda la multitud estaba en el bar de espaldas a nosotros. Ninguna persona estaba con nuestro estilo de música.
La dama del club estuvo en lo correcto, nos habían proporcionado una buena comida y le  pagaron al promotor de la gira, pero ella nos lanzó una mirada hostil después del espectáculo.
Cuando nos fuimos, nadie nos habló, ni siquiera un adiós. Tuve que reírme por la situación absurda, los demás no sabían qué pensar y se sintieron incómodos.
Cuanto más incómodos se veían, más divertido pensé que era todo.
Pensé que era gracioso, como una mala comedia. Creo que esa noche en Austria fue nuestro espectáculo más infructuoso, pero el más divertido, nunca lo olvidaré. Sospecho que los promotores de la gira realmente no les habían dicho a los propietarios del club qué tipo de música estábamos tocando, o no lo entendieron. Tampoco la audiencia (sonrisa)

5. ¿Cuáles fueron las inspiraciones para la creación de la banda y las ideas a expresar con vuestra música y letras?

Gunther:

Obviamente hay una conexión entre el nombre de nuestra banda y el enfoque lírico. La parte ANTIGUA se refiere a nuestra fascinación por las civilizaciones e imperios antiguos / medievales que están siempre enterrados por el tiempo y el polvo, mientras que los RITOS representan nuestra conexión con el lado oscuro.

Desde mi infancia, estoy consumido por estos temas y obviamente esta fascinación tiene un gran impacto en nuestro trabajo. Mi vida ha sido una búsqueda constante de conocimiento histórico.
Por lo tanto, me considero afortunado de poder viajar mucho para experimentar y presenciar con mis propios ojos todo lo que aprendí de niño a través de libros de historia y literatura.

He viajado a través del desierto del Sahara en camellos y he visitado restos de civilizaciones antiguas en lugares desolados, he visitado el templo de Baalberith donde hace miles de años se llevaron a cabo sacrificios humanos (infantes), he descendido por las criptas portuguesas, visitado los antiguos templos griegos, deambulado por las ruinas de las calles de la antigua Roma, recorrido las montañas españolas a caballo, caminado por las ciudades medievales de todo el este y el oeste de Europa, ví la estaca dónde se quemó a Juana de Arco rodeada por ríos y castillos que son testigos silenciosos del esplendor de la Edad Media, estuve en el corazón de las civilizaciones de la guerra micénica, fenicia y cartaginesa cuyas paredes y calles, para mi sorpresa, todavía estaban bastante intactas, sorprendido por los aspectos artísticos del antiguo Imperio minoico y abrumado por el esplendor de Asia Menor, etc.

Los momentos más espirituales y atemporales los experimenté al estar en lugares antiguos / medievales. Considero una ventaja vivir en una pequeña ciudad medieval, en una casa que es un monumento protegido porque es parte de una abadía medieval. Cuando miro por la ventana de mi habitación, soy testigo de la edad media, en algunas casas al lado de la nuestra hay una especie de puente donde viven los murciélagos, todo muy pintoresco.

Con respecto al lado oscuro, me relaciono con ciertas filosofías del satanismo pero de una manera simbólica (no religiosa / no dogmática).Un código basado en el conocimiento, la sabiduría, la fuerza y ​​el respeto propio.
Un enfoque realista y realmente guiado por los propios instintos y principios. Sin embargo, considero importante evitar las mismas trampas que uno puede encontrar en otras religiones. No creo en ninguna entidad superior (o inferior).

Personalmente me relaciono con tradiciones antiguas, por lo tanto, también la religión ancestral pagana capta mi interés / simpatía. Todo esto (y más) se refleja en las letras que escribo y en nuestro trabajo en general. Musicalmente siempre fue importante para ANCIENT RITES apuntar hacia una identidad propia, no creo que hayamos sonado como ninguna otra banda, ni siquiera las bandas que nos gustaron.
No hay necesidad de imitadores, ya hay demasiados. Creo que sonamos diferente en cada lanzamiento, pero el sonido al igual que el concepto es inequívocamente ANCIENT RITES.
Creo que se pueden detectar diferentes formas de Metal en nuestra música porque tenemos una larga historia (décadas) de apreciar el género en sus formas variables.
Creo que creamos nuestro propio tipo de Metal que se puede etiquetar como Black Metal, pero en nuestra manera original. Desde el primer día, siempre buscamos un enfoque auténtico.

6. ¿Qué bandas musicales han sido una influencia para vosotros?

Gunther:

Creo que ninguna banda influyó directamente en nuestro sonido. Como ejemplo, explicaré mi trayecto personal, como músico. Me convertí en un "músico" activo en los años 70, cuando era niño. Estaba escuchando Hardrock, pero fue la explosión del Punkrock del 77 lo que me inspiró a agarrar un instrumento, bandas como Sex Pistols, Ramones, The Damned, etc. El sonido "sin sentido", enérgico y agresivo me atrajo.

Formé varias bandas del género, a finales de los 70 / principios de los 80. Motörhead me inspiró a comenzar a tocar Metal a principios de los 80 y Venom abrió el camino para el Black Metal, sin embargo, no creo que nos parezcamos a ninguna de las bandas que me inspiraron a comenzar a tocar música. Incluso en mis años jóvenes, con mis bandas de Punk Rock, no sonábamos como ninguna de las bandas que me gustaban.
Siempre sentí que era importante crear algo propio, expresarse de una manera original, inspirándose en los elementos de la música que a uno le gustan, sin imitar a las bandas.
Todos en AR tienen sus propias bandas favoritas personales, nuestros gustos a menudo difieren. En realidad, eso no es negativo porque es una forma adicional de evitar ser influenciado inconscientemente por ciertas bandas.

Erik:

Estoy de acuerdo con Gunther, pero mis influencias son un poco diferentes en comparación con las de Gunther. Mi trayecto musical comenzó cuando estuve expuesto a KISS en 1979. Fue ver tocar la guitarra de Ace Frehley lo primero que me hizo querer tocar la guitarra.
Realmente comencé a tocar unos años más tarde, pero definitivamente fue una influencia en mí y todavía lo es.
Probablemente comencé a tocar la guitarra en 1988 y mi primera experiencia con una banda fue en 1989, pero eso no duró mucho.
En 1992 las cosas se pusieron más serias cuando se fundó la banda de thrash metal extremo Inquisitor.
En 1996 fuí guitarrista en una gira de Ancient Rites mientras aún estaba en Inquisitor, y me uní oficialmente a Ancient Rites en 1997.

Mis influencias son principalmente Thrash, Death y Black metal, pero entoces estaba, y todavía estoy, influenciado por Hardrock y también Heavy Metal . Si tuviera que nombrar algunas bandas que me influenciaron, nombraría Slayer, Dark Angel, Judas Priest, Sadus, Black Sabbath & Vader.

Guitarristas a quienes admiro y tengo como influencia: Michael Schenker (UFO / MSG), Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple / Rainbow), KK Downing & Glenn Tipton (Judas Priest), Uli Jon Roth (Scorpions), Toni Iommi (Black Sabbath).
A pesar de todas estas influencias, siempre he tratado de crear mi propia forma de tocar y hacer música, independientemente de las tendencias. Mi enfoque principal musicalmente es el Metal, por supuesto, pero a veces estudio guitarra de música no metálica. Todavía estoy tratando de mejorar y ser más versátil, practicando nuevas técnicas como, por ejemplo, la variedad híbrida.

7. ¿Podéis darnos una breve introducción a las letras de las siguientes canciones del álbum "Laguz" (2015) de ANCIENT RITES?

Gunther:

01 - Golden Path to Samarkand: Un viaje musical, recorriendo la legendaria antigua ruta de la seda, a través de tierras peligrosas, misteriosas y exóticas.

02 - Carthago Delenda Est: Un enfoque en la antigua civilización fenicia y su caída final al final de las Guerras Púnicas contra Roma.

03 - Under the Sign of Laguz:  La antigua runa de Laguz significa "viaje" y crecimiento físico y espiritual. Desde un punto de vista filosófico, un símbolo de conquista de obstáculos.

04 - Von Gott Entfernt: Basado en el fenómeno Bokkenrijders (Goat Riders) del siglo XVIII, una Horda oculta que operaba en nuestras Tierras Bajas causando miedo por haber robado iglesias y a ciudadanos adinerados, un miembro hizo un juramento al Diablo.
Los hechos históricos se convirtieron en folklore y mitos durante los juicios, lo que condujo a enjuiciamientos masivos, torturas y ejecuciones.
Uno de mis antepasados ​​personales pertenecía a una de las Hordas, como lo atestiguan documentos antiguos y fue considerado Capitán de su Grupo. Trabajaron con estructuras militares. Escapó de la prisión antes de su ejecución y fundó un grupo Bokkenrijders en otro lugar, según el diario de un sacerdote local de la época.

05 - Apostata: Un homenaje al último emperador romano pagano Juliano, que trató de cambiar el rumbo cuando el imperio romano había sido cristianizado. Su reinado fue corto y trágico. Los rumores dicen que fue asesinado en el campo de batalla, por su propio guardaespaldas, que había sido sobornado por el clero romano, porque su política era restaurar el antiguo paganismo.

06 - Legio V Alaudae: Enfocada en la única Legión romana oficial que no estaba compuesta por romanos sino por galos. Por lo general, los soldados extranjeros no romanos se alistaron en unidades / tropas auxiliares, pero César fundó la V durante sus campañas en la Galia con galos aliados, en contra de la voluntad del Senado romano. La legión se convirtió en legendaria, pero se encontró con su destino durante una campaña en Dacia, dominada por la superioridad numérica y completamente eliminada. Su historia fue intensa, compleja y trágica.

07 - Mind Unconquered: Una alabanza a la fuerza de la mente y la voluntad. Una actitud que siempre me ayudó a enfrentar obstáculos en la vida, espiritual y físicamente.

08 - Umbra Sumus: una canción que reflexiona sobre la mortalidad, cómo eventualmente todos nos convertimos en "sombras".

09 - Frankenland: un homenaje histórico a la antigua civilización franca.

10 - Fatum: sobre el mal destino del que uno no puede escapar cuando sus días están contados.

8. ANCIENT RITES es una banda inspirada en la historia, el paganismo y el mundo antiguo. ¿Podéis darnos una opinión personal sobre lo siguiente?

Gunther:

-Naturaleza: viajé por varios continentes y puedo apreciar la naturaleza y los muy diferentes tipos de paisajes en su amplia y atemporal variedad. Las personas generalmente prefieren un cierto tipo de paisaje, pero no puedo elegir porque cada lugar tiene su propia vibración y encantos típicos que desencadenan mi inspiración.

-Literatura oscura medieval: fascinante. Naturalmente, me encanta explorar el tipo de literatura más oscura. Tengo una gran biblioteca que contiene obras antiguas y medievales, algunos incluso manuscritos originales.
Para ser honesto, mi interés se centra en muchos tipos de escritos antiguos / medievales, no solo en lo oculto, sino también en filosofía, arte, arquitectura, historia militar, política, vida cotidiana, cultura en general ...

- Música Black Metal: un campo musical en el que me encantaba trabajar en el momento en que se creó el género. Esto fue natural debido a mis intereses personales de toda la vida. Es la expresión musical de atmósferas y temas que siempre exploré en la literatura y el arte en general. Estar dentro del  Metal fue un paso lógico para crear un estilo más oscuro.

- Mitología griega y romana antigua: muy rica e inspiradora. Desde mi infancia, he estado muy interesado en la historia "terrenal" de ambas civilizaciones y, naturalmente, su mitología es parte de ese mundo y cultura antiguos.

-Un lugar histórico de vuestro país para visitar:

Gunther:

Para los turistas con un tiempo limitado, que les gusta el ambiente histórico y la arquitectura medieval, creo que las ciudades de Brujas (Brujas) y Gante (Gante) son recomendables porque los numerosos edificios históricos y museos se concentran en los centros de las ciudades a poca distancia . También Malines (Mechelen), Tournai (Doornik), Amberes (Antwerpen) y Bruselas son ricas en historia.
Tongeren es la ciudad más antigua que data de la época romana y merece una visita. Incluso mi propia ciudad más pequeña, Diest, tiene muchos sitios históricos y ha visto muchas batallas a lo largo de la historia europea debido a su ubicación central entre provincias.

-Una bebida y comida tradicional de vuestro area: este país tiene una tradición cervecera muy rica y cada ciudad, incluso muchos pueblos, tienen sus propias cervezas regionales típicas que varían en sabor. Una gran cerveza de mi ciudad, Diest, es Guild Beer. Una cerveza que fue especialmente elaborada para las Fraternidades del Gremio local, desde la Edad Media. Soy miembro de dos de esas Fraternidades medievales: una Cámara de Retórica llamada The Lily, en la que durante la época medieval se reunieron personas de las artes, la literatura y el teatro.
También soy miembro del Royal St George Guild, eran la milicia de la ciudad en la Edad Media, responsables de la defensa de la ciudad. También participaron en campañas militares en otros lugares. Todavía practicamos el tiro con ballesta, que es nuestra arma tradicional. Recientemente, fui elegido Capitán de ese Gremio, lo cual es un honor; uno literalmente entra en una vieja tradición, ya que el Gremio de San Jorge existe oficialmente durante más de 800 años y sobrevivió hasta nuestros días.

-Una comida tradicional: hay un Panqueque especial en mi ciudad natal llamado Kruidkoek, que está hecho con hierbas típicas de nuestro valle.

-Un libro para recomendar: me encanta el escritor local Ernest Claes (1885-1968). Como ningún otro, podría escribir sobre las personas y las antiguas tradiciones de la región de finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX con drama y humor.
No creo que muchos de sus libros estén traducidos al extranjero. Sin embargo, su libro "De Witte" ("Whitey") fue un gran éxito en  Alemania. Describe la vida en nuestra región a principios del siglo XX, incluidos muchos personajes pintorescos, y se ve a través de los ojos de un niño al que le gustaba engañar a todos.
Es semi-autobiográfico. La calle en la que vivía durante mi infancia, jugó un papel en el libro y las películas / series.
Justo enfrente de nuestra puerta había un herrero. Esta ubicación fue uno de los escenarios en el libro, películas y series. Siento nostalgia cuando leo el libro o veo las películas / series, ya que mi antigua calle todavía existe, pero todas las casas se descomponen y se reemplazan por modernos apartamentos.

Gunther:

Se planean varios conciertos. Tocaremos en Alemania en el festival "Under the Black Sun". Y se confirman dos fechas en Polonia. Recientemente anunciamos un conjunto de material antiguo de nuestra demo, ep y dos primeros álbumes. Un homenaje a nuestros primeros años en escena.
